An Iron Age fort can be found in Epping Forest near Loughton, and has been called Loughton Camp. Loughton itself has been occupied since Anglo-Saxon times. It expanded from a small village in the early 17th century due to the main road through it is a direct route between London and Cambridge. Loughton Hall was rebuilt after a fire in 1878 and is a Grade II listed building, currently being used as a care home. Anderton Hall is the only surviving timber-framed medieval country house in the area, and is a Grade II listed building.
